Notes from a week of real integration work

Messy data, tight deadlines, and the small wins that made it worth it.

Last week was one of those integration sprints where nothing glamorous ships — but everything important does. A few notes while they're still fresh.

Day one: assumptions break immediately

We expected clean IDs across systems. Reality delivered typos, legacy prefixes, and records that existed in one database but not the other. The first useful hour wasn't coding — it was building a reconciliation spreadsheet with the business analyst.

Day three: the fix is smaller than the panic

The team briefly debated a new message bus. The actual solution was a idempotent sync job, better logging, and a manual override for the forty edge cases that will never justify automation. Boring. Correct.

Day five: visibility changes the mood

Once stakeholders could see a dashboard of failed rows with reasons, the tone shifted from "is it done?" to "how do we fix these twelve?" Transparency buys patience.

What I'd repeat

  • Start with data samples, not architecture diagrams.
  • Log the payload shape, not just the error code.
  • Celebrate the overnight job that ran clean, even if nobody claps in standup.

Integration work rarely makes a portfolio screenshot. It makes the business trust IT a little more — and that's worth showing up for.
